How It Works
Your email address is sent securely over HTTPS to the HaveIBeenPwned API, where it then checks it against a database of various compromised accounts from known breaches.
What Is a Data Breach?
A data breach occurs when hackers gain access to sensitive information of a website/service which can include a wide variety of information such as emails, passwords, account activity, payment information, and more. In many cases, this information is sold on black markets or released to the public.
What Should I Do?
If you find out that your password has been breached, you should immediately change it across all sites/services and use unique passwords across all sites. A password manager can help you manage unique passwords across all services which helps minimize some of the risks that occur from data breaches. Additionally, using 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) will reduce this risk even further.
